Things To Do with a Sprouted Wheat Berry

Things To Do with a Sprouted Wheat Berry

Thanks to http://www.keeperofthehome.org/2011/04/getting-started-sprouting-wheat-berries.html for this info

  • Dehydrate and mill it into “sprouted” flour for baking (or anywhere you would use “regular” flour)
  • Add the sprouts to your favorite cereal, sandwich, yogurt or salad
  • Add (chopped or whole) to baked goods like muffins and cookies or pancakes and waffles
  • “Hide” in casseroles, meatloaves or pasta sauces
  • Plant them in well drained (preferably organic) soil to grow wheat grass for juicing or just for fun!

Early Wheat Berry Roots

Will oxygen absorbers prevent my wheat from sprouting

Sprouted Wheat Experiment

thanks to foodstorageandsurvival.com for this information

By Angela

I had heard from a very reputable source in the food storage community that if you stored your wheat/beans/seeds in cans or buckets and used the oxygen absorber packets it would kill the germination ability of the seed and make it so it would not sprout. Well, knowing how important it is to be able to sprout my food for nutrition, I’ve had some specially packed without the oxygen absorbers (oxy packs). Well, a post over at M.D. Creekmore’s Survivalist Blog got me thinking about this information and I thought I’d better test it out. So here’s the experiment, plus the basics on sprouting wheat since I haven’t covered that on this blog yet.

The Wheat I used was white wheat. One batch has been stored in an orange tupperware for who knows how long. The second batch was packed in a mylar bag in 2002 with an oxygen absorber packet.
I put one cup of each wheat in a bowl and labeled them “plain” and “oxypacked”. Covered the wheat at least double with cool water and let it soak. I started around noon on Wednesday. The seeds should soak “overnight”. So if you start it before bed, you can move on to the next step in the morning, but if you start in the morning, they’re done soaking by then end of the day. That evening, I drained the water off, rinsed the wheat and put it in sprouting trays. There are lots of containers you could use to sprout wheat, I just happen to like these trays better than using a jar or something like that. The seeds need to get air or they’ll mold, but not too much air or they’ll dry out. Then I put the lids on the trays and put them in a dark cupboard.I rinsed and drained the wheat in the trays again the next morning (Thursday), and returned them to the cupboard. By that evening, the wheat was already sprouting (the tray on the left has already had a handful taken out for tasting).XU/s400/IMG_2184.JPG” alt=”" border=”0″ />

Here’s the plain wheat at the end of approx. 36 hours:And the Oxy packed wheat at the same time:The little white things at the ends of the wheat are the beginnings of the sprouts. Both trays of wheat were sprouting. You could stop here and eat them, but I like my sprouts just a little longer so I rinsed them again and put them back in the cupboard for the night. Late this morning (Friday) I pulled them out and here’s what I have. Plain wheat after about 48 hours (including soaking time):Oxygen packed wheat after approx. 48 hours (including soaking time):Now, it appears that the oxygen packed wheat actually is sprouting better than the tupperware stored wheat, most likely due to freshness. I do not recommend storing wheat in tupperware for any long period of time as it is not airtight, I just figured I’d use what was sitting around in my storage room open first for this experiment.

So the “advice” from an expert was proved incorrect. Kind of like the bottled butter! Guess you really have to test stuff out for yourself sometimes!

For reference, 1 cup of dry wheat berries yielded 1 3/4 + cups sprouted wheat.

Cayenne pepper to stop bleeding? Click here for original article.

Here’s what happened: I was preparing a salad for lunch and I inadvertently cut my finger while trying out my new chopping skills, fuelled by watching BBC lifestyle a bit too much. It was one of those nasty cuts that was like a deep shaving cut that won’t stop bleeding, rather than a deep amputation like cut. I counted at least 5 capillaries bleeding. Anyway, point is, it was bleeding, and a lot. So I did all the things that I was supposed to do, applied pressure, raised my hand and got out a bag of frozen peas. It felt much better, but it still continued to bleed and I was getting annoyed, as it had already been 5 hours and multiple bags of frozen vegetables later. I asked my husband to go to the pharmacy for me and get some tincture that stops bleeding, and he came home with TeeGel, which, I cannot even come close to explaining how not amused I was.

I thought at that point that I would succumb and have to go to the hospital for some medical assistance, and then I recalled something that you said that the best remedies can be found at home. I had read somewhere that suggested if you sprinkle Cayenne pepper on wounds, they stop bleeding. So, in a last ditch effort I did an Alia Al-Moayed, and I reached for the kitchen cupboard. I don’t know if it was the blood loss or what, but there were multiple images of your smiley face, strangely in black and white, around me. I got the Cayenne out and much to my husband’s horror, and my daughter’s confusion on why I was cooking my finger, I sprinkled. WOW.did it sting.it honestly felt like someone hit my hand with a hammer, and then jammed it into a car door. But you will not believe it. The bleeding stopped almost instantly, although the painful stinging lingered for a bit. But I’m not joking when I say, I’ve never seen anything like it, well other than electrical cautery in the OT. The bleeding stopped just like that. I was able to put a regular old plaster on it and that was the end of it. well other that growing some more skin. It was over in 5 minutes.

Cayenne Stops Bleeding: Click here for the original Article.

In my experience with my thumb the cayenne pepper worked wonderfully. The combination of the external application and drinking it in water slowed the bleeding dramatically within just a few seconds and stopped the bleeding completely within a couple of minutes. Not only that, but I had no pain either. That amazed me more than anything. The pain just stopped.

Can Cayenne pepper be used medically? Click here for the original article.

Did anybody know that Cayenne pepper stops bleeding? My friend went on a hunting trip and one of his dogs got a very bad cut on his leg. They were miles from any vets office and it was late, so on the advice of a friend he put Cayenne pepper on the cut that they happened to have in their cooking gear. He says that the bleeding stopped within ten seconds compared to the 2 hours that it would not. They stayed there for another couple of days and a cut that they were certain would require stitches healed up all by itself.

Cayenne pepper stopped my foot from bleeding. Click here for original article and video showing the blood.

So I gashed my foot pretty badly. It took me a while to think of exactly what to do because I got really light-headed from the bleeding. I put cayenne pepper on it and it actually did stop the bleeding. However, since I was alone, I had to go to the other room to get a shirt that would wrap around my foot to keep the cayenne on and to keep pressure around my foot. So once I stepped on my heel to move, blood started pushing its way out and the cayenne went with it. That’s why there’s a little more blood in one area of the last pictures than in the video at the end (I took the video first, its just not in order). But cayenne did actually stop the bleeding. It doesn’t look like it in the video, because you can still see the blood on my foot, but you should have seen it before that, there was a steady stream dripping from my foot before I put cayenne on, and once it was on, not one drop came out until I stepped on my heel.

Anyway, thank you cayenne pepper

My Experience with Home Herbal Remedies. Click here for the original article.

She put him on the counter, wiped the gushing blood out of the way and broke open two capsule-like pills onto the gash. It was about a half inch long gash about an inch above his ear. The bleeding stopped immediately. Completely. Dale explained that the capsules had ground cayenne pepper in them. She told me that the cayenne acted as a cauterizer. It actually sealed the blood vessels with a type of “burning” technique. She said it also would completely eliminate the possibility of infection and would heal without a scar. The powder formed its own type of scab and therefore the skin would not form a scab and therefore there would be no scar. She said to keep it dry for a couple of days and it would fall off naturally. No more worries!

I was amazed and prayed that it would work! Dustin was quiet through all of this, then said, “Mommy, can I come back tomorrow and catch a calf?” Silly Boy!!! Dale was right…the bleeding stopped immediately and permanently, there was no infection (as dirty as a calves hoof is??), it fell off naturally and without a scar. The only way you know where the gash was is with his military haircut it shows as a tiny spot which does not have any hair growing in it. Oh, by the way, the clown brought him 3 crisp $1 bills. He was thrilled!

Many years later, I fell, broke and skinned my leg. I will have to write a hub on it! It was an amazing healing, but when the skinned area began to show signs of infection I pulled out the cayenne pepper from the kitchen cabinet and poured it over the entire area. A week later, the cayenne scab began to flake off and the infection was completely gone and I have no scar. It was a win, win situation. I use ground cayenne pepper now for every cut and scrape. It works every time.

Couponing in Arvada, Colorado

_____ There are like tons of places on the internet to go to to look a couponing stuff. But there are only so many coupon deals to get the scoop on. Right now I am getting 2 Sunday Denver post. This gives me 2 Red Plum and 2 Smart Source inserts. When you go to a blog on couponing you will see them refer to “R” or “RP” for the Red Plum insert and “S” or “SC” for the Smart Source inserts. Plus the date (usually Sunday) the insert came out like 6/18/2011. Start by looking at one of my favorite sites The Krazy Coupon Lady. _____ In Arvada you can get Red Plum inserts in the Arvada Press that comes out every week and is delivered to your door. Sometimes I will pick up a few extra copies at the Stanley Lake Library in the little room where they sell used magazines and books. Smart Source inserts are a little harder to come buy. Every once and a while I grab some out of the newspaper recycling bin at the King Soopers on 58th ave as seen in this post. _____ You have to save a stack of inserts from week to week. Keep a file or a pile if you want but be sure to put the date on the front cover of the insert so your will know what week it is from. On the binding of the insert in tiny letters if the publication date. I have to use a magnifying glass to see it. Don’t use your coupons until the item goes on sale. You can check out what the current sales are by signing up for free at CouponMom.com. This tells you what is on sale at what store and what insert to look for the coupons in. Some times the coupon you need is from several weeks back, so be sure to start a good pile of inserts. ____ Don’t get too crazy on checking out coupon blogs(like this one). There are an endless number of them and you can spend your whole life looking at different ones. Mostly they can only cover the same things. Pick a few favorites and stick with them. Learn to get around on the site as each one presents their stuff a little different. There are paid coupon sites and I tried on for a while. The paid sites are nice in many ways, but I am way to cheap to pay $10 or more a month to let them organize my coupons for me. There are also coupon clipping services and coupons available on ebay, but stay away from these for a while if you are just starting until you kind of learn the ropes a bit. ____ Skip any Couponing 101 Classes you might hear of or see on the internet. Just slug it out and figure it out on your own. It’s a little scary at first when you wonder if they are really going to give to the item free or if you did it all right or if they are going to hate you for using too many coupons. Both Safeway and King Soopers are posting a small sign saying they will take at most 3 coupons on any given item. So be nice about it and don’t load up the registers with your coupon quest (extreme couponing). There are plenty of deals to be had and you really don’t need 18 bottle of free shampoo (although I did get 5 tube of free toothpaste a while ago). _____

Pasteurize water at 149 Degrees F. WOW!!

Do you have to boil water for 10 minutes to make it safe to drink?
No, try 149 degrees F., Yes this article tells all about it.
How many people are drying from bad water?? Check it out.
Must read for preppers and home storage fans.

To see the Complete article on pasteurizing water at 149 Degrees F. click here.

ABSTRACT
In addition to cooking food, solar cookers can also be
used to pasteurize contaminated water, by heating the
water to 65°C. To verify that water has been heated to
65°C, a reusable, wax-based water pasteurization
indicator (WAPI) is added to the water. When the WAPI
wax melts, pasteurization has been accomplished. As
part of the Sunny Solutions project in Nyakach, Kenya,
women are using the Cookit solar cooker to both cook
food and to pasteurize their contaminated water. They
report a significant decrease in diarrheal diseases as a
result. The Nyakach solar cooks and village leaders have
been taught how to use innovative water testing methods,
Colilert tubes and Petrifilms to test their water before,
and after solar pasteurization. The package of water
testing materials, Cookit and WAPI combine to address
two main problems in developing countries: lack of wood
for cooking and unsafe water for drinking.

Rx for Success

What turns a dummy pill into a catalyst for relieving pain, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, or the tremors of Parkinson’s disease? The brain’s own healing mechanisms, unleashed by the belief that a phony medication is the real thing. The most important ingredient in any placebo is the doctor’s bedside manner, but according to research, the color of a tablet can boost the effectiveness even of genuine meds—or help convince a patient that a placebo is a potent remedy.—Steve Silberman

Please don’t eat my Lawn!!

From an article posted here.

Now, let’s take a moment and go back to how ‘wheat’ grass came to light. A woman by the name of Ann Wigmore founded Hippocrates in Boston approx. 50 years ago. She actually healed her own health issues by chewing on ‘lawn’ grass. That’s right; I said lawn grass, not wheatgrass. She began chewing on it and got sick for many weeks, but stayed with it till she eventually started feeling better and better. She learned that the grass / greens were the most complete foods on the planet, as well as having other healing properties. The wheat seed was chosen because of its sweeter, more palatable taste. (Her cat picked it out.) She also learned that the green / chlorophyll will increase the hemoglobin in the blood which then distributes oxygen to every cell in our body. Take another deep breath! Remember that oxygen is a good thing? Ann started this because of watching the animals do it, as well as a statement that was made to her as a child, “Instinct guided creatures, left to them selves, do not make mistakes.” (I LOVE that one.) Most of us chewed on grass as children, if it was around. Why then and not now? We lost sight of our instinct.

A Surprising Super Food: Popcorn

Wow, Check out this info on popcorn – mel

A Surprising Super Food: Popcorn

Source is Posted July 20th, 2011 by Sarah Cherim

In addition to being a nutritious, delicious, whole grain snack, popcorn is also incredibly inexpensive. It is a low-calorie favorite and because it is so airy, it is a filling snack as well. Dr. Oz even named it a super food! It has always been my favorite food and after you read this, you may fall in love with it, too!

Martha Stewart taught me this amazingly easy tip for preparing plain corn kernels. Put 2 tbsp. of corn into a paper lunch bag and fold down the top once or twice (leaving plenty of room for the kernels to pop). Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Melt a tablespoon of butter in the microwave for 10-20 seconds and pour into the bag, along with a teaspoon of sea salt. Shake well and pour into a bowl, or you can eat it right out of the bag! It should make about 4 cups, which is just under one serving.

Land O Lakes butter spread with olive oil is my all-time favorite on popcorn. I am a big fan of simple products with few ingredients. Land O Lakes butter has only three ingredients: sweet cream, olive oil, and salt. As a bonus, olive oil is loaded with heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids. Land O Lakes also has a delicious cinnamon sugar variety.

The amazing thing about this trick: you know EXACTLY what’s in the bag. No need to worry about trans fat, artificial colors, or partially hydrogenated oil. Also, you can season your popcorn with whatever you’d like: garlic powder and dried basil, or cayenne powder and cumin. If you have a sweet tooth, try using the cinnamon butter or brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice.

This tip is ideal if you’re trying to eat healthy on a budget. You can get a 2 pound bag of kernels for just a dollar and that dollar will make 36 bags of popcorn! Compare that to store bought popcorn- twice the price, half the popcorn! No need to purchase a pricey and bulky air popper and the paper bags are a dime-a-dozen. This makes me wonder, why do movie theaters charge so much for a small bag of this amazingly inexpensive super food?

Ways to Use Wheat WITHOUT a Wheat Grinder!

Ways to Use Wheat WITHOUT a Wheat Grinder!

From FoodStorageMadeEasy.net

Thermos Wheat

Bring 1 c. of wheat kernels, 2 c. water, and 1 t. salt to a boil in a medium saucepan. Pour into a heated stainless steel or glass-lined thermos bottle. Secure cap. Place bottle on side. In the morning, pour off any additional water, add butter and honey, and serve hot.

Cooked Wheat Berries
Add some of your plain dry wheat kernels to a pot of water. Bring it to a boil and cook for a few minutes. Then let simmer for about 45 minutes. Drain the wheat berries and stick them in a tupperware container in the fridge. These are delicious to add to yogurt or to use to replace some meat in recipes. You can also use it in place of brown rice in a lot of recipes.

Popped Wheat
Take 1 cup of your cooked wheat berries (see above) and add to a frying pan of pot with two tablespoons of oil in it. Cover with a lid and cook over a hot stove shaking the pan while it cooks. After about 4-5 minutes the kernels will be nice and toasted. Put the popped wheat on a paper towel to get the extra oil off, and sprinkle with your choice of seasonings. Try it with salt, seasoned salt, garlic, barbecue salt, onion salt, cinnamon and sugar or any combination you desire. These are delicious on salads as a topping, mixed with trail mix, or as toppings for a desserts or just as a healthy snack.

Wheat Grass
Most people have heard how healthy wheat grass is for you, but most people DON’T know that you can make your own wheat grass at home for free with just a little bit of your food storage wheat. Check out this step by step tutorial on Safely Gathered In if you want to try it yourself! It looks so easy. Then you can snip bits off and add them to your fruit smoothies, or if you have a juicer you can use them in other healthy juice drinks.

Cracked Wheat in a Blender
You can crack wheat in a blender or a coffee grinder. To do it in a blender you simply put in about 1/4-1/3 cups of wheat and pulse it until it looks like little cracked kernels. These kernels will cook much faster than regular wheat, and cook up in the same way that you cook rice on the stove or in the microwave. You can use cracked wheat to make hot cereal, add it into bread, or cook it up and use as a meat filler.

Wheat Sprouts
Making wheat sprouts is a different method than making wheat grass. You can sprout wheat just like any other vegetable seeds, legumes, or other grains. Most people like wheat sprouts to be very small, just barely sprouted. These are delicious to throw on salads or to add into your whole wheat bread for a little extra texture and flavor.

Whole Wheat Blender Pancakes

Makes 6 to 8 pancakes Ingredients:   A. 1 cup milk (1/3 cup non-fat dry milk and 1 cup water)  B. 1 cup uncooked whole wheat                   C. 2 eggs (¼ cup powdered egg and ½ cup water)  D. 2 tablespoons oil  E. 2 teaspoons baking powder  F. 2 tablespoons honey                       G. ½ teaspoon salt

Put the milk and wheat in the blender. Blend on the highest speed for four or five minutes or until the batter is smooth. Turn the blender down to low and add in: eggs, oil, baking powder, honey, and salt.         Cook on hot griddle.

meljr is a mormon missionary

I haven’t been doing as much posting because I was called to be a service missionary at the LDS DryPack cannery.
So far it has been great and I have met a lot of great people interested in food storage. About half of the people who are coming to the DryPack cannery are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. WOW!

More interesting items on the DryPack cannery and some food storage info latter!
